UK Day 5-2 Hogwarts Express- Mallaig to Fort William

2011-7-3 Sunday

Finally, we arrived in Mallaig train station, we took some pictures with the steam train.

Since the lunchtime stopover was one and half hour, we decided to walk around and find a good place for lunch:

It was a small village. We took a few walks and found no place to go. We started to look for the toilet. It was interesting that we could not find any public toilet. Soon, we realized that we needed to select a restaurant for the toilet. We picked up one restaurant and ordered the famous fish and chips for lunch. One thing impressed me during this trip was the business model they create to get tourists and make money here.

One the way back to Fort William, to make sure I had better position to take photos for the famous 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct. I didn’t take seat when I got on train.

The good thing was that I could enjoy the view and breeze compared to stay in the coach. However, the disadvantage was the small particles of coal residue coming to my eyes from time to time, especially when the train passed tunnels.

When the train approached to Fort William, I was surprised and happy to see some highland cattle and a nice boat parking on the river.

When we arrived in Fort William, it was about 4:30pm. John wanted to go to wee-wee. We gave him 20cents for toilets. John came back and returned the money to us. He said the toilet manager told him to go under the gate and don’t need to pay.

Since it was still early, we wanted to know more about tomorrow’s destination – Glencoe. We asked the ticket center for the location of tourist information center. We were lucky to get into the information center in time. When we just got into the information center, the lady locked the door at 5 pm sharp. We became few of last tourists staying in the information center.

On the way of looking for tourist information center, I realized Fort William is much bigger than I expected in advance. When we walked back to pick up our car, we found a big supermarket right next to train station. It was a good place for shopping food and free toilets.
